"The first martins of the season!" exclaimed Tom Striker, local naturalist and owner of Blue Ridge Bird Seed Company.
Last weekend he and Deborah MacCarthy, Cadence Marketing Director, ventured up the wooded slopes and down to the wetlands to get a firsthand look at the place she had discovered and long promised to bring him. Knowing it would be a great place to bring his "Wing Watcher" Birding Club of Fannin County.
Several meandering flows of water revealed the architect of the wetlands: a beaver and his dam. Tom and Deborah explored the acreage for optimal sites for wooden observation walkways. "The land must be preserved and protected for the animals, yet be accessible for folks to enjoy this. It is a delicate balancing act to be sure." His 15 years as a forester/ naturalist in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan and his passion as a birder give credence to his words. Tom and his wife, Sonja, have owned the busy Blue Ridge Bird Seed Company for 4 years. Both retired from Bellsouth, they feel fulfilled running a store that has become the hub for Blue Ridge residents and tourists looking for information about birds or the next new squirrel defying birdseed feeder.
Tom makes time for birding seminars and weekly bird walks, newsletters and talks at local schools. Watch for the Fannin County Wing Watchers, his newly formed birding club. Give him a call at 706-258-2473 or visit him at the store on Main Street right across the street from Cadence Sales Center.
By drawing upon such local expertise, Cadence Equestrian Community is poised to bring great additional pleasure and value to the development. Thanks, Tom! (and bring those wood duck boxes you promised!)
Sincerely,
Cadence Sales Staff
